In 1982, the Ferrer family of Spain, proprietors of the world’s largest producer of sparkling wine (Freixenet U.S.A.), purchased 250 acres of land in Sonoma’s Carneros wine district; they then planted vineyards with the traditional sparkling wine grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1986, the winery was built, with its Spanish-style architecture and breathtaking hillside location. The winery was named after José Ferrer's beloved wife Gloria.

Xypex stops unsightly wet spots and water seepage that can lead to maintenance and safety problems. At the same time, humidity is fundamental to successful wine cave engineering, and while Xypex stops seepage, it permits moisture vapour migration through the cave liner to help maintain a desireable humidity level.

In most instances, the New Austrian Tunneling Method, also known as the Sequential Excavation Method, with minor technology advances, is used to excavate and support wine caves, used for crushing, bottling, aging and marketing the harvest.

Alf Burtleson Construction of St. Helena, CA, has specialized since 1972 in wine cave and tunnel construction. Xypex has been integral to every Burtleson installation since the mid-1980s when the company first tested and proved the many benefits of Xypex Crystalline Waterproofing Technology.
