International Nile Club, Celebration Hall
The International Nile Club, a prestigious landmark located along the shore of the Blue Nile river in Khartoum, Sudan, embarked on a significant project that encompassed both new construction and the rehabilitation of existing structures. Initially, the club used traditional waterproofing methods such as bituminous membranes and HDPE sheets for basements and various areas. However, these measures failed within a year, leading to extensive leakage in numerous areas of the building, including the basement.
The project faced several challenges and risks, notably the initial rejection of crystalline waterproofing solutions by the client due to unfamiliarity and skepticism towards the technology. Additionally, the project required meticulous coordination among different contractors due to the site's many construction activities and the extensive waterproofing repairs needed in the many areas with leaks. In response to the waterproofing failure, Protech Engineering Co. Ltd submitted a technical proposal advocating for the use of the unique Xypex Crystalline Technology. This proposal was accepted, marking a pivotal shift towards a more innovative, reliable, and durable waterproofing solution.
Xypex Concentrate is a cementitious mix applied as a slurry coat that works on positive or negative side applications and doesn’t need a dry surface. It renders concrete permanently waterproofed, chemically resistant, and capable of self-healing cracks up to 0.5 mm. This product was chosen for its proven efficacy and was applied to approximately 1,200 m2, including parts of the basement, trenches, elevator pits, the celebration hall, and other critical areas of the main building.
The successful integration of Xypex Concentrate not only resolved the immediate issues but also ensured reliable and long-lasting concrete waterproofing and protection, enhancing the overall longevity of the structure. This project illustrates the transformative potential of Xypex Crystalline Technology in overcoming construction challenges, reinforcing the value of advanced materials in ensuring the longevity and prestige of landmark projects like the International Nile Club.
