Following construction, deterioration was identified in concrete surrounding channel drains within sections of the tunnels. These areas are subject to persistent moisture and water exposure, creating the need for additional protection of the existing concrete.

Xypex Concentrate was selected to provide protection to the concrete in and around the tunnel drainage channels.The treatment was applied to channel drains across the Red and Green Line tunnels. Xypex’s crystalline technology works within the pores and capillary tracts ofthe concrete to help resist the penetration of water and other liquids. The system provided a practical solution for protecting the existing concrete without requiring replacement of the affected sections.

The Xypex application provided protection to concrete exposed to the demanding moisture conditions within the tunnel drainage system. According to the original project record, the Roads & Transport Authority was satisfied with the performance of Xypex and recommended its consideration for future applications.
