Wastewater Clarifier Repair advancing City Green Initiatives

Hollywood, Florida, USA

The city of Hollywood, Florida, is steadfast in its commitment to sustainability, exemplified by initiatives such as maintaining and upgrading its wastewater treatment infrastructure with sustainable solutions. At a groundbreaking ceremony to announce a $112 million investment for a new pump station, complete with deep injection and monitoring wells, Mayor Josh Levy emphasized the significance of this work, stating that it "demonstrates the city's dedication to the environment and other positive green initiatives."

Moreover, the city opted to sustainably maintain the plant's infrastructure by rehabilitating and repairing two clarifiers instead of replacing them, resulting in a significantly lower carbon footprint while saving both time and money. Xypex played a pivotal role in realizing this sustainable initiative.

The Hazen and Sawyer team opted for Xypex Megamix II for the rehabilitation project, drawing from their positive past experiences with the product. This repair mortar is specifically designed for patching and resurfacing deteriorated concrete, offering a remarkable combination of attributes.

Boasting superior bonding, minimal shrinkage, chemical durability, and exceptional strength, Xypex Megamix versatility allows for application via spray or trowel, with a thickness range of 3/8" to 2 inches (10-50 mm) per layer. Most importantly, it contains Xypex's proprietary crystalline waterproofing and protection technology, ensuring enduring waterproofing throughout the concrete's lifespan.

During the rehabilitation process, observations revealed concrete degradation on the walls and troughs, necessitating repairs due to missing concrete and exposed rebar.
The contractor followed ICRI concrete standards to patch deteriorated areas with Megamix II then spray-applied it over the entire concrete surface, covering 55,000 sq. ft. at a depth of ½ inch.

Upon completion of repairs, the clarifiers resumed operation in April 2022, poised to support Hollywood's population for years to come. Despite delays caused by the pandemic and supply chain disruptions, the North Florida Xypex Representative ensured the timely delivery of the products and stayed with the project from start to finish, culminating in impressive results.

Rehabilitating the clarifier tanks with the proven Xypex technology was a superior choice. The Hazen and Sawyer team's familiarity with Megamix II expedited the process, guaranteeing excellent results. "We have certainly been happy with Xypex, and we appreciated their involvement," Philip J. Cooke of Hazen and Sawyer.
