Article: The Science Behind a 187-year service life

Published in the Sustainable Engineering Special Issue, this article examines Xypex Crystalline Waterproofing across three critical dimensions: technical performance, environmental sustainability, and economic viability. Drawing on the Oklahoma DOT corrosion study and decades of field data from Lascelles Wharf, the article shows how Xypex-treated concrete continues to improve over time – with predicted service life extending to nearly two centuries.
Beyond performance, the piece details Xypex’s NSF 61 certification, Environmental and Health Product Declarations, LEED contribution, and the embodied-carbon advantages confirmed in a recent KPMG technical comparison. For architects and engineers specifying for durability and sustainability, it’s required reading.

Hankook Tire Manufacturing Facility – Mat Slab and Foundation

This month’s spotlight goes to the Hankook Tire Manufacturing Facility, where Xypex was specified to protect the mat slab and foundation from groundwater ingress and the long-term deterioration that follows. Tire manufacturing demands uncompromising structural integrity -heavy machinery, continuous operation, and decades of service all hinge on what’s underneath. By embedding crystalline waterproofing into the concrete itself, the facility’s foundation becomes self-healing, sealing micro-cracks as they form and keeping the substructure protected without reliance on external membranes.

JEA Bio Solids Facility Jacksonville, USA

Wastewater treatment is one of the toughest environments concrete will ever face, chemically aggressive, perpetually wet, and unforgiving of failure. At the JEA Biosolids Facility in Jacksonville, Xypex was specified to protect concrete structures against chemical attack and moisture penetration, extending service life and reducing the maintenance burden of a facility that runs around the clock.

Raffles American School Nusajaya, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

High humidity, tropical downpours, and year-round heat demand waterproofing that won’t blister, peel, or fail at a seam. Raffles American School in Nusajaya turned to Xypex to protect critical structural elements healing the concrete from within and providing the low-maintenance, long-life protection a school environment requires.
