85th Ave. Apartment Building
In this new apartment building in Redmond, Washington, over 400 cu. yd. of concrete were placed with shotcrete containing a 2% dosage rate of Xypex Admix C-500. Shotcrete was placed against the piles and lagging to form the single-side form walls which are becoming a popular method of below-grade wall construction. Xypex Admix was also used to waterproof the slabs and elevator pits. More than 24,000 lb of Xypex Admix C-500 were used in 2,400 cu. yd. for this project. The property is next to Bear Creek and has a high water table.
Xypex Admix allows construction to continue without interruption (delay in the construction cycle) or having to wait for favorable weather conditions which is the case with exposed membranes or materials that are moisture or water sensitive (bentonite). As long as concrete is placed within ACI guidelines it can be waterproofed with Xypex Crystalline Waterproofing Admix, which the ACI classifies as a ‘PRAH’ (pore reducing admixture for hydrostatic pressure) admixture.
Xypex Admix has also been used on many shotcrete applications in aquarium and zoo exhibit construction, where it has been recognized for its performance in water holding structures. Many of these exhibits contain salt water and require protection against chloride induced corrosion for its steel reinforcing, which is an essential requirement for shotcrete.
